What Is It – Child Counselling

What is child & adolescent counselling?

Care built around
how children think.

Child and adolescent counselling is specialised therapy designed for the emotional, behavioural, and developmental needs of young people aged 3 to 18. Unlike adult therapy, sessions are adapted to the child's age and way of experiencing the world — using play, art, structured conversation, and creative methods where appropriate.

For younger children (3–7), play therapy allows them to express what they cannot yet put into words. For older children and adolescents (8–18), structured conversations, CBT-based techniques, and adolescent-specific frameworks are used.

Parents are actively involved throughout — not just informed, but genuinely part of the process. Many sessions include parent guidance alongside the child's sessions to create consistency at home.

Signs – Child Counselling

Is this right for you?

Your child might benefit
from counselling if...

Children and adolescents often cannot say "I need help." Instead, they show it through behaviour, mood, or withdrawal. These signs are worth paying attention to.

Your child has become unusually withdrawn, anxious, or tearful — and it has lasted more than a few weeks.

There are significant behavioural changes — aggression, defiance, regression, or loss of skills they previously had.

School performance has dropped, or your child is refusing to go to school entirely.

Your adolescent is struggling with identity, peer pressure, social anxiety, or is withdrawing from relationships.

Your child has experienced or witnessed something difficult — a family change, a loss, bullying, or trauma.

You have noticed signs of anxiety — excessive worry, physical complaints before school, fear of separation.

Your child has difficulty regulating their emotions and their reactions seem disproportionate to situations.

Your adolescent is showing signs of low self-worth, hopelessness, or has said things that concern you.

Journey – Child Counselling

What to expect

How child therapy
works.

Child therapy moves at the child's pace — not the therapist's agenda. Here is a general sense of how the process unfolds.

1

Session 1

Parent consultation

We begin with a separate parent meeting — understanding your child's history, your concerns, and what you have already tried. Your child does not attend this session.

No child present · Fully confidential
2

Sessions 2–4

Building trust with your child

The therapist focuses on making your child feel completely safe. For younger children, play and creative tools begin here. For adolescents, an honest relationship is established.

Trust is the foundation
3

Sessions 5–12

The work begins

Your child starts processing and expressing what they are carrying — through words, play, or creative expression. Patterns become visible and shifts begin.

Visible change starts here
4

Ongoing

Parent feedback loops

Regular parent check-ins (every 3–4 sessions) ensure what happens in therapy reinforces what happens at home. You are always part of the picture.

You are never left out

Testimonial – Child Counselling

My daughter stopped talking about school entirely and I had no idea why. After three months of play therapy, she started opening up — first with her therapist, then with me. I finally understand what she was carrying. The changes at home have been remarkable.

FAQ

Questions about child & adolescent counselling

These are the questions we hear most before a first session. If yours isn't here, we're a message away.

Still have a question?

Message us on WhatsApp — Mon–Sun, 9 AM–7 PM.

01

Will my child be told they are going to therapy?

Yes — but we can help you with how to frame it. Children respond well to honest, simple language: "We are going to talk to someone who is really good at helping children with their feelings." We can advise on exactly how to introduce it.
02

What is shared with me as a parent?

You will receive regular updates on your child's progress and any important themes. However, your child's specific words and sessions are kept confidential — this trust is essential for therapy to work. You will always know the direction, never feel excluded.
03

At what age can my child start?

We work with children as young as 3 years old using play therapy. Structured therapy begins around age 7–8. Adolescent counselling runs up to age 18.
04

My child refuses to come. What do we do?

This is very common. We recommend starting with a parent-only session to plan the best approach. Sometimes a pre-meeting where your child just sees the space (no pressure to talk) makes a huge difference.
05

Can we do sessions online?

Online sessions are available and work well for adolescents (13+). For younger children, in-person sessions are strongly preferred — play therapy requires a physical space and materials.
