What Is It — Addiction & Recovery — Manovritti

What is addiction and recovery?

Addressing the why,
not just the what.

Addiction is not a moral failure - it is a response. Most addictive patterns develop as a way of managing something: pain, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, or simply an unbearable level of stress. The substance or behaviour provided relief - for a while.

At Manovritti, we work with substance use (alcohol, cannabis, prescription medications, recreational drugs) and behavioural addictions (gambling, gaming, pornography, social media, food). Our approach addresses the psychology beneath the addiction - the needs it was meeting, the pain it was managing - while also supporting practical recovery goals.

We do not offer medical detox or inpatient programmes. What we offer is the psychological work - the part that determines whether recovery lasts. This is done alongside medical detox if required, with coordination between our team and your medical providers.

Is this right for you?

You might benefit from
addiction support if...

You do not have to have lost everything for this to be relevant. Many people come before it reaches crisis - and that is the best time to come.

You use a substance or behaviour to cope with stress, anxiety, loneliness, or difficult emotions - and it has become the primary way you manage.

You have tried to cut down or stop multiple times and found yourself returning - even when you genuinely wanted to quit.

The substance or behaviour is affecting your relationships, work, finances, or physical health - and you can see it happening.

You feel shame or secrecy around your use - hiding it from people you care about or minimising it to yourself.

You find yourself needing more over time to get the same effect, or feeling anxious and irritable when you try to stop.

Someone who cares about you has expressed concern - and even if you dismissed it, part of you knows they are right.

You use the substance or behaviour to get through normal things - sleep, social situations, work, or being alone.

A family member, friend, or colleague is struggling with addiction and you want to understand how to support them.

Journey — Addiction & Recovery — Manovritti

What to expect

The recovery
journey.

Recovery is not a straight line - but it does have a direction. Here is a rough sense of how the psychological work of recovery unfolds.

1

Phase 1

Understanding the pattern

We explore what the addiction has been doing for you - not to excuse it, but to understand it. Most addictions make sense in context. Naming that context is where change begins.

No judgement - only curiosity
2

Phase 2

Building motivation and readiness

Ambivalence is normal - the part of you that wants to stop and the part that does not. We work with both, using Motivational Interviewing to strengthen your own reasons for change.

Your reasons, not ours
3

Phase 3

Developing new coping strategies

We build a practical toolkit - alternative ways to manage the emotions, triggers, and situations that the addiction was handling. This is not abstinence through white-knuckling; it is replacement with something sustainable.

Real skills, not willpower
4

Phase 4

Relapse prevention and long-term recovery

We anticipate high-risk situations, build a relapse prevention plan, and address the underlying issues (often trauma, anxiety, or depression) that made the addiction necessary in the first place.

Recovery becomes a way of life

Testimonial — Addiction & Recovery — Manovritti

I had convinced myself I could stop whenever I wanted. It took three failed attempts and an honest conversation with a therapist to understand that willpower was never the issue - what I was using it for was. The therapy helped me address the real thing. I have been in recovery for 14 months.

FAQ

Questions about addiction and recovery

The questions we hear most before a first session. If yours is not here, we are a message away.

Still have a question?

Message us on WhatsApp - Mon to Sun, 9 AM to 7 PM.

01

Do I need to have already stopped using before I come to therapy?

No. You can come at any stage - whether you are still using, trying to cut down, or already in early recovery. We will meet you where you are. You do not need to be ready to stop completely to benefit from talking to someone.
02

Is what I share completely confidential?

Yes - with one exception. If we have serious clinical concern that you are at imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, we have a duty of care to act. For all other content - including your substance use - everything you share is confidential and will not be disclosed without your explicit consent.
03

Do you offer medical detox or inpatient programmes?

No. We are a psychological services clinic, not a medical facility. We do not provide medically supervised detox. If you need medical detox, we can coordinate with your doctor or refer you to appropriate medical services - and provide the psychological support alongside and after.
04

What about family members who are affected by someone else's addiction?

We work with family members too - helping you understand addiction, manage your own wellbeing, and navigate the complex emotions that come with loving someone who is struggling. This is valuable regardless of whether your family member is seeking help.
05

Can behavioural addictions (gambling, gaming, social media) be treated the same way as substance use?

The psychological mechanisms are very similar - same reward pathways, same avoidance patterns, same underlying needs. The approaches we use (CBT, Motivational Interviewing, relapse prevention) are effective for both substance and behavioural addictions.
